3072: Safe Detox in a Jail Setting      
This program gives an overview of addictive drugs and common withdrawals often seen in inmates by staff after arrest. Included is a presentation on teaching correctional staff to use the CIWA and COWS protocols for withdrawal, as seen from a deputy's perspective. Handouts included.

Session Objectives
Upon completion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:  
1. Identify 4/7 symptoms that signify an inmate is in alcohol or opiate withdrawal.     
2. Identify blood alcohol level that can result in death.  
3. Recognize both the CIWA and COWS scoring tools and understand why they are a valuable resource for psychiatric nurses.
